Kieran takes lead in discussing our predicament with Pack Rockwell. The alpha who came at us with a shotgun is named Rylan, their pack lead. Levi and Jax flank me on either side as we sit around a fire pit near the back of the compound.

Across from us, Pete’s gaze frequently strays towards my mother, his eyes holding an unspoken admiration that doesn’t go unnoticed. The faintest hint of a smile graces her lips each time their eyes meet, though she tries to mask it.

The other members of Pack Rockwell are off on a hunt, but Rylan has already called them back and told us they should return by nightfall tomorrow.

That means more waiting.

“We need your help to stage a coup,” Kieran says at last after we’re out of pleasantries and backstories to exchange. “We want to take the OA down once and for all.”

Rylan’s eyes, sharp and assessing, flicker over us, but he remains silent, an unspoken challenge in his gaze.

“It will be dangerous, but we can’t let them hurt any more women. It’s not just omegas they’re after,” I manage to say, the undertow of my heat making every word a struggle. It’s always hardest at night. But they need to know about Dani’s capture, about Mom’s altered biology, about everything that the Alliance has kept so well hidden even from its own membership.

Rylan, with his broad shoulders and furrowed brow, exudes an air of skepticism. He’s an older alpha, hardened and battle-weary. “I understand your concerns about what they’re doing, but the Alliance rules us all. They’re too powerful for you to challenge and emerge victorious. Why should I agree to sacrifice my pack to a losing battle?”

“It’s not just about challenging the OA,” I begin, my voice steady despite the mounting pain of my heat cycle. It gnaws at my insides like a persistent ember, but I push through. “It’s about the future we want for our children, for the generations that come after us.”

My mother adds softly, her voice filled with a mother’s wisdom and concern, “If we don’t act now, there might not be a ‘later’ for any of us.”

Pete, casting another fleeting glance at my mother, speaks up. “We know they aren’t the good guys, but have you considered that maybe there aren’t any good guys left? The ones who want power are always corrupt in some way. Who’s to say toppling the Alliance won’t let an even worse faction rise in their place?”

I look deeply into Pete’s eyes, trying to convey the urgency of our plight. “I can’t make any promises, but I also can’t do nothing at all. We have to act, and we have to do it now. That’s why we’re here, asking for your help. The strength of our packs combined can make a difference. We can present a united front, use it to recruit others to our cause.”

Rylan shifts uncomfortably, his gaze darting between the flames and my intense stare. “I can’t make any decisions without my entire pack present.
